The inadequacy of accessible and safe childcare resources for the urban poor drove UMBC to create an affordable crèche service.

The children of the basti have access to little; some have neither adequate housing, nor easily accessible sources of clean water and sanitation, nor avenues for good quality education and extra curricular platforms. This particularly constrains their mothers and carers, as they often have no finances left over to procure any services that reduce their childcare time commitments, and enable them to be economically active.

The UMBC crèche is a viable step toward alleviating these constraints. We offer two care arrangements: whole day boarding or 7:00am until 12:00pm. The service includes a nutritious breakfast and lunch for the children, engages them in stimulating learning to develop their foundational knowledge, organises entertaining extra-curricular activities, educates them on sanitation practises (as they centre has sanitation facilities, whereas many of their homes do not) and provides a safe place while their parents are at work, undertaking training and or away from the home.

The program is administered entirely by educated and trained woman from our target urban poor community.
